Vane is proud to announce the gallery’s third consecutive year of participation at the VOLTA art fair, Basel. We will present work by Narbi Price at VOLTA10, Basel, Switzerland.
Narbi Price is interested in perceived histories of locations and how painting can question the understanding of architectural and pictorial space. He challenges the conventions of photographically derived painting in terms of paint application and composition, and in blurring the line between the figurative and the abstract. His paintings are derived from photographs taken on trips to places that have witnessed a range of events, from murders to whimsical acts that have spawned folklore.
For example, Untitled Car Park Painting (AC) is from a series depicting the locations of the ‘Jack The Ripper’ murders of 1888 as they are today. The only acknowledgement of the site’s provenance is that the work’s title is suffixed with the victim’s initials. ‘Untitled Black Door Painting (304)’ shows the front door to the home of Joe Meek, pioneering record producer, most famous for the iconic Telstar by The Tornados. Here in 1967, sunken into debt and depression, Meek shot and killed his landlady and himself. Untitled Canal Painting depicts a beauty spot where a Victorian drunkard murdered his wife and where English soap opera star Pat Phoenix ran a popular pub close to a century later. Untitled Well Painting shows a significant site in North East English folklore, celebrated in the song The Lambton Worm, claimed to be that of the Lambton Well where Lord Lambton threw the Wyrm (or Worm) before leaving to fight in the First Crusade.
VOLTA
VOLTA celebrates its decade edition as Basel’s renowned art fair for new and emerging art from 16-21 June 2014. VOLTA returns to Markthalle, the historic domed landmark situated in the heart of Basel and former venue of VOLTA5 in 2009. Conceived to bridge a gap between Basel’s pre-existing fairs, VOLTA showcases galleries – whether young or mature – that choose to work with the most exciting emerging artists. These galleries must keep deeply meaningful connections with their artists and follow them throughout their careers. In turn, select galleries exhibit in the airy rotunda surroundings of Basel’s Markthalle, elevating their own platforms for an experience mutually beneficial to fair visitors and the galleries alike.
